WHAT CHALLENGE HAVE YOU FACED IN GROWING YOUR BUSINESS?
Well, the biggest challenge i had was how to have access to capital to start my business. Most financial institution requires collateral to lend you money because SMEs are somewhat perceived as risky borrowers, and the truth remains you need money to make money. As time goes on I started with the little I had and ALHAMDULILLAH
Another major challenge I faced as an entrepreneur was when I first started business, I made listening to clients/customers a top priority.
I simply do anything they ask for… they want a particular product, then I stock it up in different colours and designs.
Lo and behold, when the products are readily available, the people who requested for them disappears are no where to be found or don’t just need the products anymore… It was quite frustrating.
Along the line I designed a policy of selective listening and also strict payment terms that insists up to 60%-70% payment upfront, if you want a new inventory that’s not already in stock, then you show commitment by paying an upfront.
Upon effecting this policy, I realised some customers were not happy, but we have eventually built a client base (Lolahs Modesty League) that understands our policy are willing to abide by it.
HOW DOES RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS COMPARE WITH BEING EMPLOYED?
See I always reiterate, that your cooperate experience will always prepare your foundation for business ownership. Now I’m not saying everybody will and must be an enterpreneur. Its not possible, but the truth is… Once you have a passion for whatever you do and it works for you, then that’s what you should keep doing.
There’s a joy you feel when you know that you’re fulfilling a need somewhere. For me, self employment has given me a sense of true purpose and an opportunity to serve the Ummah using my professional skills. Some people combine 9-5 and are still successful enterpreneur and they’re doing fine.
WHAT WOULD BE A MUSLIMAH PRACTICAL OUTFIT TO YOU
Haya (Modesty). Modesty in everything. An excellent piece of clothing put together to shield the aura of a Muslim woman, that is functional and also multipurpose. An outfit that can be worn to the office (employer or business) and can as well be used to perform ablution and pray.
CONSIDERING YOUR PASSION IN PUBLIC HEALTH & MEDICAL SCIENCE, IS THIS SOMETHING YOU HAVE CONSIDERED EXPLORING FURTHER?
Smile… All I can say is that I am very passionate about it and its something I have already ventured into. I am the FOUNDER of a health blog CORE HEALTH INFO and the vision is still very much alive.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS?
My advice is to keep doing whatever you do… keep doing it and make sure you’re good at it. Hard work and resilience is never out of vogue Its OK to fail, but make sure you rise back.
Also try to invest in learning more about your line of business and do your research very well.
