International Women’s Day is usually celebrated on March 8th every year. It’s a day when we celebrate the brave, strong, amazing women and their social, cultural, economic and political achievements – while also campaigning for greater progress towards gender equality.

In recent years there have been a huge increase in the number of businesses around the world celebrating International Women’s Day. If you walk into any of the world’s most powerful institutions (government, academic or corporate) you will identify that more women are also contributing to the growth and shaping history of any institution they find themselves. This is to highlight that the power of women in history cannot be under estimated.

Africa is awesomely a large continent of international interest, with lots of woman changing the current narrative about Africa, and also about ‘re-branding’ the continent.

But all in all International Women’s Day isn’t just about these movements alone. It’s a day for everyone – women and men – to celebrate the things we and our female friends, colleagues and the women who inspire us, have done and will do on behalf of women.

Why not play your part, starting from today to make the most of International Women’s Day as a day to Make a big Difference?

So we put it you.. What can you do to celebrate this day?
How can you change the narrative? How can you make a difference?

Here are few great Ideas we put together to help you.

It only takes a minute to change a life. Make a donation to support a Girl Child Education. Go to programs that seek to give girls and young women the opportunity to reach their potential through education or empowerment.

JOIN A MOVEMENT ;- Endeavor to join or partake in any march that encourages women to march for an end to gender violence, both domestic and institutional, Abuse, Racism etc.

READ BOOKS WRITTEN BY WOMEN ;- Celebrating International Women’s Day doesn’t have to involve big political or public gestures… you can do it in your own small personal way just by reading a great book by a female author. And if you’d like to get others involved, host a book club at your work or community center where there will be discussions about how to move forward and make a difference in the society and most importantly to help the female populace at large. Here are some great books by female authors;-
Difficult Women by Roxane Gay. A short story collection about the challenges facing women in modern America.
This Too Shall Pass by Milena Busquets. Set in the coastal Spanish town Cadaques, a woman comes to terms with her mother’s death.
The Book of Memory by Petina Gappah. An albino woman languishes on death row in Zimbabwe’s Chikurubi prison.
The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, by Lola Shoneyin London: Serpent’s Tail, May 2010.
Double Yoke by Florence Onyebuchi “Buchi” Emecheta(1982) (I personally love this Author).
Americanah, by Chimamanda Adichie 2013.

ATTEND A WOMEN’S NETWORKING EVENT;- Whatever professional industry you belong to, March is an excellent month for women’s events and conferences. These events help female professionals and entrepreneurs to support and empower each other, share knowledge and arrange mentorships. If you’re a professional woman or a successful entrepreneur, consider volunteering as a mentor for a younger person in your field. Or put yourself forward as a speaker and share your knowledge on stage.

Finally, DONATE TO THE LESS PRIVILEGE IN YOUR COMMUNITY AND REMEMBER TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE WOMEN YOU LOVE;- A great way to celebrate International Women’s Day is by making a donation to your local refuge, or the less privilege… They’d be happy to receive your kind gestures. And lastly you can make the women in your life feel really special- whether it’s your mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, girlfriend, or a female friend… you can send flowers, write a card, give a small gift items, or take them out to a movie. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman; we can all show our gratitude and love for the women around us.
